Chuck Blount on Poker: Players tout game as ‘microcosm of life’ (San Antonio Express-News, 11/28/07)
“I was one of the first to transition these (poker) skills into an entrepreneurial model,” Addington said. Addington outlined that the skill sets needed to be good at poker and entrepreneurship are vast. Both require discipline and the ability to handle people. Both require a game plan and a strategy that can best execute it. If the game plan is lacking or fails, there should be room for modification.”

Congress Alarmed over USTR WTO Online Gambling Stance as Nov 30 Ruling Date Looms (PokerPages, 11/29/07)
“If the World Trade Organization (WTO) arbitration panel fails to make a ruling on Antigua’s USD $3.4 million claim against the United States, which is due by November 30, then billions of dollars in trade sanctions could be claimed as early as next month by seven WTO members, including the European Union, as a result of the US deciding to pull online gambling out of its trade treaties and ignoring repeated WTO rulings recognizing the legality of Internet gambling versus opening US borders to offshore gaming operators.”

Law + Poker: Ken Adams is Winning at His Own Game (The Washingtonian, 12/07)
“Since then Adams has oriented his legal practice more to representing poker organizations, such as online site PokerStars. He is working on a federal-court appeal for a professional poker player battling IRS rules about deducting entry fees as business expenses. So it was natural in November that when Adams was invited to a poker fundraiser at the National Building Museum for Horton’s Kids, which funds tutoring for inner-city kids, it was both business and pleasure for Adams to donate $1,000 and enter the charity tournament.”

press release:
Free Poker Network to Send 21 Players to the 2008 World Series of Poker (Free Poker Network, 11/29/07)
“Similar to pool & dart leagues, poker leagues have become increasingly popular as a form of entertainment to drive in traffic for bars. Participants compete in weekly Texas Holdem tournaments for points and there is never an entry fee for the tournaments. The Free Poker Network poker leagues are currently hosted at 240 bars across the upper Midwest with well over 10,000 active players.”

USC Takes on UCLA in GPSTS Team Poker (GPSTS, 11/28/07)
“The Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTS) will continue its schedule of inter-school matches this weekend with a team poker competition between USC and UCLA as part of the run up to a national inter-school poker tournament in March 2008. The USC-UCLA match will take place on Friday, November 30, at 1 pm, on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles and will coincide with the weekend’s annual football game between the two southern California rival schools on Saturday.”

JK Harris Warns Poker Players and Sponsors of New Regulations (JK Harris, 11/29/07)
“Poker players and tournament sponsors beware. The IRS is implementing a new requirement for reporting poker tournament winnings beginning March 4, 2008. “In the past, sponsors and players have been confused over whether sponsors who hold the money for players are required to report the winnings and/or withhold taxes on the winnings,” said Mark Walstrom, an Enrolled Agent and Licensed Taxpayer Representative from JK Harris & Company, the nation’s largest tax resolution firm.”
