DeWeese to introduce table games next week (Post-Gazette, 06/12/07)
“Now that Wheeling, W.Va., has legalized table games, Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Bill DeWeese is forging ahead with a bill to legalize blackjack, poker and roulette in the Keystone State. He plans to introduce the bill next week, aide Tom Andrews said yesterday, but he’s already introduced a related property-tax measure, House Bill 1489. It would increase the state sales tax by 0.5 percent and use the $700 million in additional revenue to lower property taxes, in addition to relief provided by casino revenue.”

“Now that table gaming is legal in Ohio County, Wheeling Island Racetrack isn’t missing a beat. Local contractors began work early Monday on new section of the racetrack that will soon house the poker tables. Wayne Soard, vice president of operations for the track, said the room will have slots and poker and it’s getting a major overhaul right now”

Opinion: Gambling on the future (Baltimore Sun, 06/12/07)
“Voters in West Virginia produced a split decision over the weekend when it came to authorizing table games at two of the state’s racetracks. The result was good news for Maryland racing: Jefferson County voters decided they didn’t want blackjack, poker and the like at the horse racing track at Charles Town, a facility already awash with slot machines. But the episode also provided a model of how such decisions ought to be made – only with the approval of the communities where gambling venues would be located, that is. Because while Jefferson County voted its proposal down, voters in Ohio County went the other direction and approved table games for a dog racing track in Wheeling by about a 2-to-1 ratio.”

House Financial Services Cmte. Hearing on Internet Gambling (C-SPAN, 06/08/07)
“Recently, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) introduced H.R. 2046, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act. He chairs a hearing of the House Financial Services Cmte. to examine the safety and security of online gambling. This bill reverses parts of an Internet gambling bill passed last year.”
