“Two more counties have approved June 9 as the day voters will decide whether to allow poker, blackjack and other table games at their racetracks, setting up a simultaneous decision on all four West Virginia casinos. Commissioners in both Jefferson and Hancock counties unanimously set the special referendum date Thursday at the request of track owners, following the lead of Ohio and Kanawha counties.”


Maine governor wants to stop gambling bills (Casino City Times, 04/05/07)
“As reported by the Bangor Daily: “A measure that would authorize a casino in Oxford County is part of growing list of bills which would expand gambling in Maine, and it’s a trend Gov. John Baldacci vows to stop. “Baldacci said he does not understand why there are several proposals before the Legislature to expand gambling, and he plans to oppose all of them. He wants any expansion decided by the voters, not the Legislature.”

“Poker fans who want to play Texas hold ’em in the Lone Star State may not be looking at the best hand, but they’re going all in. A bill in the House would let the state regulate poker rooms so people could play for cash. Some of the money from the rooms would go to affordable housing programs. “You can take a two and beat a hand with an ace in it if you know what you’re doing,” said Chris Jones, a Houston police officer for 28 years. “The best hand doesn’t always win.”

Slava Fetisov, the Russian Sports Minister for the “Federal agency of physical culture and sport”, agreed to the landmark decision to make poker a sport in mid March.”
