Russia’s Putin signs New Gambling Bill into Law, outlaws Online Poker (Poker Pages, 1/01/07)
“Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a bill into law December 30 that will close casinos and slot-machine halls across most of the country in a few years, forcing the establishments that have become a garish feature of the new Russian landscape into four legal gambling zones. The law also outlaws online gambling and online poker, and sets the minimum gambling age of 18 years”

Looking Back And Looking Ahead (Poker News, 1/01/07)
“It was interesting, though, to see how the poker world banded together to try to prevent it from coming to pass and, as soon as the bill was signed into law, how quickly that bond was broken by many of those same brothers in arms. I know there are legalities that required some to make the moves they did, but it would have been a significant signal to the “powers that be” if the Internet poker world had stuck together and fought it out.”

Looking In On: Gaming (Las Vegas Sun, 12/31/06)
“Nearly three months after Congress further criminalized Internet gambling, Americans are still finding time in their busy holiday schedules to place a bets. The world’s largest Internet poker site, PartyPoker.com, has slipped to No. 2 after refusing to accept bets from Americans, ceding the top spot to PokerStars.com, according to recent data from PokerSiteScout.com.”

High stakes for MSU Alumni (Minot Daily News, 1/02/07)
“Rupert said they were looking for an event that would draw a large crowd during a time of year when there aren’t a lot of events in Minot. The poker tournament also provides an alternative New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day activity, she said, and many of the poker players and their families will spend money in Minot.”

Pokerroom cheats customers (Lion Tales, 12/29/07)
“People will always gamble. Poker is one of the most entertaining forms of gambling, combining skill and luck in an exciting and sometimes frustrating game. When government nannies make it illegal for adults to play, adults will simply play illegally. But so will children, since without regulation there are no controls on who a site can allow. And, as we have just seen, there is no recourse when a dishonest site decides to cheat its customers.”
