Legislative panel agrees to church gambling (WIS News 10, 02/15/08 – SC)
“Gambling for charity, in church of all places, would be legal in South Carolina under a bill that’s been approved by a state Senate panel. The legislation would let churches and other nonprofit groups host card and other casino games to raise money, exempting them from South Carolina’s 200-year-old law that prohibits dice and card games.”

Beshear proposes opening 12 casinos across state (News Channel 5, 02/15/08 – KY)
“Gov. Steve Beshear has unveiled a proposal that could legalize casinos in Kentucky. The newly elected Democrat called Thursday for 12 casinos in various parts of the state. Although Kentucky has a long tradition of wagering at horse tracks, state law specifically forbids casinos. Beshear wants lawmakers to approve a measure that would allow Kentucky voters to change the constitution to allow them.”

February features plenty of action for poker players (Southtown Star, 02/14/08 – IN)
“A number of area casinos are going after poker players in a big way with tournaments and cash prize attractions in February and beyond. Texas Hold’em poker fans will have plenty of chances to test their skills at the Blue Chip Casino Hotel in Michigan City, Ind. “We’re featuring poker tournaments every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday this month,” said Lynda Henson, director of table games at Blue Chip. “We offer live poker exclusively so players get the full, exciting gaming experience.”

Heartland Poker Tour is flush with success (The Courier, 02/15/08 – IN)

“For every high-profile professional poker player who has gained pop culture stardom via the popularity of the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour on TV, there’s an average man or woman who loves the game just as much and longs for a tournament circuit in which they can participate.”

“A new study by Harvard Medical School researchers questions the prevailing view that gambling addiction is a progressive and intractable disorder. In their analysis of five longitudinal studies of gambling behavior, the investigators found no evidence to support the commonly held assumptions that individuals cannot recover from the disorder.”
